Our favorite baby wool
Babies love being cozy and warm - and what could be nicer than knitting or crocheting for a baby?
Cute little baby hats, socks, rompers or jackets - there are no limits to your imagination.
By the way, self-knitted baby clothes make wonderful gifts for new or expectant parents!
In this category we have summarized some of our most popular baby yarns for you.
What characterizes good baby wool?
Baby skin is very delicate and very sensitive. Babies don't like scratchy wool at all.
Unlike wool for children's clothing, for example, where durability and robustness are also important, when choosing the right baby wool, you should choose wool that is as soft and cuddly as possible.
In addition, wool for the little ones should be as low in pollutants as possible. This means dyed as gently as possible and ideally Ökotex 100 certified.
But of course that wasn't all!
If you have a baby at home or know someone with a baby, you will probably agree that baby things also have to be practical.
By this we mean, first of all, that baby clothes must be easy to wash. A laborious hand wash is often a bit too much of a good thing in the stressful everyday life of a baby.
Machine washability is another plus point for a good baby yarn.
Please be cozy and warm
Baby wool should not only be particularly soft but also particularly warm because babies freeze much more easily than adults.
Babies lose their body heat easily, especially on their heads - so a self-knitted or crocheted baby hat is always a good idea.
Remember that natural fibers generally keep you warmer than synthetic fibers.
We therefore recommend that you use a yarn made from 100% natural fiber or with only minor additions.
Merino wool or something else?
And what do we take now?
Clearly - the absolute favorite is and remains merino wool.
Merino wool is nothing other than normal new wool - i.e. sheep's wool.
The crucial difference is that Merino wool, which is of course obtained from Merino sheep, is particularly soft and the fibers are extremely fine.
As a natural fiber, merino wool provides excellent warmth and is also moisture-regulating.
That's why Merino wool is ideal for baby things.
But normal, high-quality sheep's wool also has these properties and can be used well.
You should also make sure that your baby wool has good elasticity and resilience. Especially with larger pieces, such as baby blankets, you will appreciate it if you choose a high-quality yarn from the outset.
If you want to knit baby clothes for the summer, virgin wool would be too warm. Here it is advisable to switch to a cotton yarn.
When it comes to cotton yarns, you should also make sure that they are of high quality and that the yarn is very soft.
